“Who are you going with?”

Hey there Reader!

Why are so many women deciding to travel alone?

One thing that amuses me about my travels these days is how often my plans surprise other women.

Q: Where are you headed next?
Me: [increasingly in the recent past it'll be some random, non-top10 destination like: Gabon, Sierra Leone, Qatar, Poland, etc.]
Q: Who are you going with?
Me: No one.
Pause...
Q: Do you know anyone there?
Me: No.
Another pause...
Q: Why are you going?
Me: Because I want to visit the place.

I can almost see the mental calculation. 😂

Wait. She is going to another country. Alone. And she doesn't even know anyone there?

Yes.

And the funny thing is, it wasn't always this way.

I didn't suddenly become fearless. I simply travelled more.

Africa. Europe. Asia. Oceania.

Each trip taught me something... how to navigate unfamiliar places, make decisions, deal with the unexpected, ask for help and, most importantly, Trust myself.

And I think something similar is happening for many women.

We have more independence than previous generations. We have information at our fingertips. And life changes.

Children grow up. Careers change. Relationships change.

And sometimes we realise we've spent years waiting for someone else to be ready to travel with us.

Eventually the question becomes:

What if I went anyway?

Solo travel doesn't necessarily mean being lonely.

It can mean lingering in a square because you enjoy watching the world go by, changing your plans because something interesting caught your attention, or simply having the freedom to decide what you want to do today.

Of course, there are challenges.

But this is what I've come to believe:

Travel confidence is learnable.

You don't have to be born adventurous. You don't have to be fearless. And you certainly don't have to know everything before you leave home.

You become more confident by travelling.... One journey, one destination, then the next... then another...

You discover that you can ask for directions. Survive a wrong turn. Deal with the unexpected. Find help. Trust your instincts.

And eventually, you realise:

I can figure this out!

So when a woman asks me, “Who are you going with?”

These days, I sometimes want to say:

“I'm going with ME.” 😄

Perhaps the better question isn't “Who will I travel with?”

It's: “Where would I go if I stopped waiting for someone else?”

Maybe... Perhaps... Possibly... YOUR next adventure is waiting on the other side of that question. 🤔🌎

Warmly,

Your Travel Coach,
