What if she doesn't want to take you with her?

Not because she can't afford to. Not because she doesn't love you. Not because something is wrong. She just… wants to go alone.

And if you're a woman who's spent years being there for everyone else, you know how complicated that can feel. There are children to think about, a spouse, family, friends, church, work, and all those responsibilities that don't disappear simply because you've decided you need a little time for yourself.

So even the thought of travelling alone can bring that little stab of guilt.

Ouch.

But shouldn't I take them? What will they think? Won't they miss me? Is this selfish?

And maybe that's why you've been postponing it. Not because you don't want to go, but because somewhere along the way, you've become so accustomed to considering everyone else's needs that your own desires have started requiring justification.

But what if you simply want to step away? Not from the people you love, but from the constant being needed.

To wake up and ask, β€œWhat do I want to do today?” and have the answer belong entirely to you.

To wander without coordinating. Sit somewhere for two hours because you feel like it. Change your plans halfway through the day. Eat what you want. Be responsible for nobody but yourself. To hear your own thoughts again and discover what you enjoy when nobody else gets a vote.

Because sometimes solo travel isn't about escaping your life.

It's about meeting yourself within it.

And yes, that can be frightening, especially when you're used to being the one who holds everything together. There may be guilt. There may be fear. There may be that little voice saying, β€œMaybe I should wait.”

Wait until the children are older. Until work settles down. Until your spouse can come. Until everyone else is free. Until there isn't so much happening.

But here's the uncomfortable truth:

The timing will almost never be right for everyone else.

There will always be a birthday, a school calendar, a family commitment, a work deadline, someone who needs you, someone who can't come, someone who thinks you should wait.

But what about your timing?

What about the woman who has been waiting patiently for permission to do something simply because she wants to?

Perhaps she doesn't need to wait until everyone else is ready. Perhaps she can go now.

Not because she loves them less, but because she's realised that loving people and choosing herself aren't opposites.

She can step away, breathe, rest, explore, get lost, laugh, think, be curious and fill her cup.

Not because she owes anyone a better version of herself when she returns, but because she deserves to be full too.

And if reading this makes you think about a woman you know, perhaps she's been talking about that trip for a while. Maybe she's been saving ideas, scrolling destinations, quietly dreaming, and then finding another reason to postpone it.

Maybe what she needs isn't another reason why she can't go.

Maybe she needs someone she loves to say:

β€œGo. We'll be fine. Go be YOU for a while.”

Because sometimes the journey isn't really about the destination. Sometimes it's about discovering the woman who emerges when, for a little while, nothing and nobody is asking anything of her.

And when she comes home, she hasn't abandoned her people. She hasn't stopped loving them. She hasn't forgotten her responsibilities.

She has simply remembered herself.

And maybe that's a journey worth taking.

Will you give her permission?

Walking around Macedonia Square, Skopje, North Macedonia

Hi Reader! You don't have to be fearless to travel alone. After travelling to sooo many countries, I'm still not sure I've become fearless about travel. I've simply become much more confident that I can figure things out. Take Skopje, North Macedonia (located in Eastern Europe, North of Greece, and was part of the former Yugoslavia). I'd spent the evening sitting around the main square, people-watching and enjoying the energy of the city. Eventually I realised it was after 8pm (Yikes! This is...

Hey there Reader! Why are so many women deciding to travel alone? One thing that amuses me about my travels these days is how often my plans surprise other women. Q: Where are you headed next? Me: [increasingly in the recent past it'll be some random, non-top10 destination like: Gabon, Sierra Leone, Qatar, Poland, etc.] Q: Who are you going with? Me: No one. Pause... Q: Do you know anyone there? Me: No. Another pause... Q: Why are you going? Me: Because I want to visit the place. I can almost...

Hi Reader! Today's the day. Tonight, I'm opening up the story behind something that took 37 years to happen. 100 countries. It started with my first flight from Kenya to Germany in 1989. Today, I'll take you through what happened between country #1 and country #100. Some wonderful adventures. Some lessons. Some mistakes. Some scary moments. And plenty of things I couldn't possibly have predicted when I took that first flight. 🌍 WEBINAR (Free to Join): From One Flight to 100 Countries πŸ“…...
